Tour Down Under, fourth stage: Von Hoff rides to victory in spectacular finish

Tour Down Under

Cycling: The fourth stage of the Tour Down Under from Glenelg to Mount Barker sure was an exciting one. In the end it was the Austrialian Steele von Hoff who took the victory after avoiding the big crash that occured on the final meters. BMC Racing defended their 1-2 GC lead with Dennis and Evans.

It seems to be a trend in this year’s Tour Down Under – seconds after the red flag has gone, riders start attacking, trying to get away and open up a gap. It took a while until the first small group successfully established a breakaway. After 23km, Michael Hepburn (Orica-GreenEdge), Peter Kennaugh (Sky), Cedric Pineau (FDJ) and Jack Bobridge (UniSA) managed to get away. However, the peloton lead by BMC and Sky was carful not to let them get away too far. On the first climb up to Sellicks Hill, Bobridge pushed and after he had secured the points in the mountain classification, he went back into the peloton. Hepburn, Kennaugh and Pineau stayed in front for a little while longer before surrendering one by one after about 60km.

After that, various riders, teams and groups tried to escape the peloton and get away again. Some of them succeeded for a short while, but eventually they all surrendered to the pressure of BMC who of course tried to protect their top riders Dennis and Evans. However, keeping up this pace was a tiring effort and resulted in the peloton splitting into three parts. First was a rather small group led by BMC, then came the majority of the riders and way back at the end, there was another small group led by Giant-Alpecin’s Marcel Kittel who was 4 minutes back already with only half of the race gone. Until the final climb up to Mount Barker, no one got away and everyone was preparing themselves for a bunch finish. Then, just about 200m from the line, one of the riders in the front fell and numerous others with him. The Australian Steele von Hoff (UniSA) avoided the crash and secured his first ever stage victory at pro level.
