Cycling: With three of four stages already over, the Santos Women’s Tour is still far from decided. Italian rider Valentina Scandolara of Orica-AIS is still on top of the GC after winning the first stage on Saturday.
No question, the main goal of the Italian allrounder is to hold on to the Blue Jersey of the overall leader until the very end. After coming in third in the third stage this morning, her Team Director Gene Bates told the media: “The idea was – the plan was to retain the jersey. We have a really classy rider in Valentina who can climb, sprint, time trial, the whole lot. We’re confident she can wrap up the whole thing. The plan today was to allow her to conserve. We also wanted to deliver Mel as best we could to the finish and let her defend for herself.”
So far, Scandolara’s allround campabilities and the astonishing team work of Orica-AIS have been the key to success. It will be exciting to watch whether they will be able to keep her in the lead during tomorrow’s fourth and final stage – a criterium around Victoria Park.
